Stein Castle
Stein Castle tells the story of the Habsburg era and is now a popular place to include on a day trip. Perched high above the city, visitors can take in the breathtaking views and experience the magic of centuries gone by.
The ruins of Stein Castle, located on the Schlossberg hill, are one of the most impressive sights in Baden and reveal an exciting chapter in history. Built probably in the 11th century by the Counts of Lenzburg, the castle was passed down through inheritance to the Kyburgs and then to the Habsburgs. During the Middle Ages, it served as the official residence of the Habsburg bailiffs until its destruction in 1415 during the Swiss Confederates' conquest of Aargau.
Today, you can walk through the city tower from Schlossbergplatz and climb the steep stairs to reach the castle ruins and enjoy the fascinating panorama. Old illustrations show that the castle once consisted of a residential tower, a palace, and a triangular courtyard containing a watchtower and a chapel. The watchtower and chapel survived the demolition and can still be visited today.
Along with the castle ruins, the medieval city's silhouette and ring walls also shape Baden's cityscape. Originally, it started at the castle chapel and wound its way gently to the northern wall of the old town houses. The Stein ruins are therefore not only a place to relax and enjoy the view, but also a living monument to Baden's history as a spa town.
