Spanischbrödlibahn

The Spanischbrödlibahn was Switzerland's first railway line. It brought people together, established culinary traditions and established Baden as a vibrant hub, connecting people and welcoming guests from near and far.

History of the Spanischbrödlibahn

Baden surprises visitors with its famous spa culture and fascinating infrastructure history. A new chapter began here in 1847: Switzerland's first railway line connected Zurich with Baden and became known as the Spanischbrödlibahn. This revolutionised travel, establishing Baden as a central hub in the Swiss rail network.

The name refers to the legendary Spanischbrödli, a delicious puff pastry that was once only available in Baden. Even during the week, wealthy Zurich residents did not want to miss out on it and would send their servants out in the middle of the night to bring the delicacy home in time for Sunday breakfast. The new railway suddenly made this quicker, and according to legend, this is how the Spanischbrödlibahn's success story began.

In addition to its historical charm, Baden has much to offer visitors. The elaborately constructed route, with its ten tunnels, was built under harsh conditions, and the fears surrounding the ‘speeding’ railway at the time tell of a period of upheaval. This impressive heritage remains alive today.

Since the Great Badenfahrt in 1937, the faithful working replica of the Spanischbrödlibahn has been a symbol of the city and its festivals. Built for the street festival, it quickly became the centrepiece of the Badenfahrt, delighting generations of visitors ever since.

In 2017, when the city government decided to discontinue the operation and maintenance of the Spanischbrödlibahn due to high costs, it seemed that this historic attraction was coming to an end. However, the city's passion for history and awareness of the railway's cultural significance prevented it from being scrapped. CityCom Baden, the Badenfahrt association, and the Baden City Gymnastics Club joined forces to found the Spanischbrödlibahn association, ensuring the long-term preservation and electric operation of this urban landmark.

In 2019, the railway was symbolically handed over to the newly founded association for one Swiss franc – a hugely significant act. Thanks to the passion of its members and the support of numerous private patrons and sponsors, the tram was converted to an environmentally friendly electric drive as part of a complex overhaul. Thus, this almost forgotten relic has been transformed into a lovingly restored attraction, travelling through the city as a living ambassador for Baden's history and diversity.

Since spring 2022, the Spanischbrödlibahn has been back in regular service, charming and nostalgic yet electric. It is equally popular for private occasions, celebrations, club parties and corporate events. Whether as an original eye-catcher at the next Badenfahrt or as a living link between the past and the present, the railway brings history to life, making Baden's history more accessible than ever before.
