Baden Carnival

The Baden Carnival is an integral part of the city's cultural life and transforms Baden into a place full of colour, music and festive joie de vivre every year. For several decades, a varied programme consisting of street carnival, Schnitzelbänke (satirical songs) and parades has ensured a colourful atmosphere in the city centre.

Interesting facts & tradition

A special highlight is the tradition surrounding the Füdlibürger. Since 1930, this figure has been accused every year of all the misdeeds of the past year. The Füdlibürger is pulled on a horse-drawn cart from the lower station square through the city to the scaffold in the ditch under the high bridge. There, the carnival court of the Spanischbrödlizunft reads out the charges before he is sentenced to death by fire. The Baden carnival traditionally begins with the judge's verdict: «Executioner, light the fire, the Baden carnival begins.»
