Stadtturm Baden

City Tower

The city tower in Baden welcomes you from afar. Its striking gate opens onto Weite Gasse, one of the city's most beautiful promenades. This historic landmark is the perfect place to start your walk through the old town.

The city tower in Baden is one of the city's most impressive landmarks. Standing above the northern exit of the upper town, it is the only surviving defensive tower of the medieval city fortifications. Formerly known as the Bruggerturm or Baderturm, it dates back to the second half of the 15^(th) century.

Its distinctive hipped roof, which features an elaborate rafter pattern in the city colours of black, red and white, makes the tower unmistakable. The tower has been renovated and structurally altered several times. In 1990, the spire was given new copper cladding and the tiles were replaced after a storm caused extensive damage.

From 1846 to 1985, the city tower served as a district prison and its narrow cells still bear witness to this period. This makes it an exciting place where culture and history come to life, as well as an architectural landmark. The historic gate on Schlossbergplatz is visited on city tours such as 'Witches, Murderers, Prostitutes and Arsonists' and is occasionally used for special events.

A walk through the city centre will almost inevitably take you past the city tower. Located directly on Schlossbergplatz, it can be seen from afar from the train station and invites visitors to experience Baden's eventful past up close.
